The first Chief Cadet Captain and Cadet Adjutant, of the university is Emperor D.O. Alagoa. from the university regiment unit. The university is headed by PROF EMMANUEL MUNAKUROGHA ADIGIO (MNSE, MNIM), as the Vice Chancellor of the school.

Admission Requirements
Admission into Maritime University is open to everybody who is interested in studying in the school, so long as the person is sure they will meet the school admission requirements. To get admitted into Nigerian Maritime University, it takes two different methods, and the two methods are direct entry admission and JAMB UTME admission.
JAMB UTME Admission Requirements
The first method through which candidates can apply for admission at the NMU is through UTME, and below are the requirements:
- Candidates must have at least 5 credits passes in their O’level results, Mathematics and English are included, and three other courses related to their course of study.
- Candidate must score not less than 60 in the just concluded JAMB UTME, to be qualified for the NMU aptitude test
- Your O’level results must not be more than two sittings
- The minimum age for all applicants is 16 years and above
- Candidates must ensure that they choose the right subject combination as prescribed by JAMB.
- Before candidates will be considered for admission, they must meet the conditions and cut-off mark of the school.

Direct Entry Admission Requirements
The first method through which candidates can apply for admission at the NMU is through Direct Entry, and below are the requirements:
- Candidates must have at least 5 credits passes in their O’level results, Mathematics and English are included and three other courses related to their course of study.
- Your O’level results must not be more than two sittings
- The minimum age for all applicants is 16 years and above
- Candidates must ensure that they choose the right subject combination as prescribed by JAMB
- Direct entry candidates must obtain the JAMB Directly entry form from JAMB before they can apply
- Level certificates or any of these: OND, NCE, IJMB, Cambridge A level.
