Imo State University is a state-owned university that was established in 1981 by the Imo State House of Assembly Law No.4. the institution’s pioneer students were admitted on 23 October 1981. The Uturu campus of the university became the Abia States after the creation of Abia State in 1991.
The University was running on free education for all her indigenes during the tenure of the former Governor of Imo State His Excellency Rochas Okorocha. The free education grant came to an end in 2016.
Professor Adaobi Obasi, the Acting Vice Chancellor made it known to the students immediately the free education program came to an end stating that going forward students will pay for their tuition fees.
Since its establishment, the university has been graduating first-class students, and the best-graduating students usually receive an award from the university mostly they are given automatic employment by the university.
The university operates a faculty system, and those faculties are administered by Deans and Faculty Officers. They also have heads of departments who are administrators of the different departments of the school. The faculty board of the school is made up of the deans, heads of departments, and faculty heads.

IMSU Post-UTME Admission Requirements
- Every applicant must have a minimum of 5 credits in the O’ Level that is WASCE, GCE, and NECO
- Every applicant must not have more than 2 sittings, it’s unacceptable.
- Every applicant should check the JAMB brochure for the correct JAMB subject combination for their course.
- The student should not score less than 160 in the just concluded JAMB UTME examination if they must be considered for the offer of admission at IMSU
- Candidates of IMSU must make IMSU his/her First Choice Institution
- Every applicant must take part in the university Post UTME/Screening examination to be qualified for admission
- The candidate should not be a minor but must be 16 years old and above before he/she is suitable for application
