The Ignatius Ajuru University of Education started with Dr William Maxwell Jnr, as its leader. He was a USAID representative sent to Rivers State, and the University all started as an Advanced Teachers’ Training College on 14th June 1971.
It was as a result of inadequately trained teachers for the expansion of post-primary education in River State in 1970 after the civil war, that gave birth to the Advanced Teachers Training College.
In 1975, the promulgation of Edict No 1 on 25th February of the same 1975, upgraded the training centre to Rivers State College of Education. And the principal of the school Mr Emmanuel Aguma became the first Provost of the new College.
The first graduation ceremony of the college took place on 11th March 1978, and 462 students from four different sets received Certificate in Education.
In 1982, affiliated with the University of Ibadan to offer a Bachelor of Education degree programme for students. So, in that same 1982, the College admitted its first candidates for the Bachelor of Education degree programme
But since the vision of the founding fathers was to have its own autonomous university that will award a degree, the college was upgraded again to a University, under the University of Education Law
However, it was on October 20, 2009, that His Excellency, Rotimi Chibike Amaechi, the governor of Rivers State, officially pronounced the institution a university.
But in 2010 it was renamed Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, in honour of a one-time Chairman of the institution’s Governing Council, the person of late Ambassador Ignatius Ajuru, who championed the upgrading of the College to a University.
The leadership of the institution is anchored on the shoulder of Professor Okechuku Onuchuku, and the University have fifty (50) teaching departments and seventy-four (74) Professors that handle the affairs of the students. Visit https://iauoe.edu.ng/ for more information.
