It is charged with improving equitable access to Education by everyone in Nigeria and was created to ensure that quality Education was made more easily accessible in the Country.
It was however on 5th November 2012 that the University commenced Academic activities and was officially renamed to “Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike (AE-FUNAI) after the Late Civilian Former Vice President of Nigeria, Dr. Alex Ekwueme.
The geographical location of the University is in the Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, around 25 kilometers away from the State capital, Abakiliki.
The University premises cover an impressive 438 hectares of land from where it has been operating since its establishment. This has afforded the University the platform to provide its teeming student population with the much-needed set of tools for mental emancipation through quality Education delivery.
The University currently has 11 Faculties that offer Academic Programmes of a high standard including Agriculture, Basic Medical Sciences, Biological Science, Education, Engineering and Technology, Environmental Science, Humanities, Management Sciences, Social Sciences, and Physical Sciences.
The University also has a well-established College of Medicine as well as a School of Postgraduate Studies to help expand the knowledge base and research.
They offer both Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programs (M.Sc and Ph.D.)
Although the University is relatively new, it has continued to grow steadily over the years and continues to remain a center of learning and character grooming.

Admission Requirements For Admission Into FUNAI
All Individuals seeking to pursue any of the available Programs at FUNAI should meet the following requisite conditions.
For those seeking admission to FUNAI through JAMB UTME;
- A minimum of 5 O’Level Credits (SSCE/GCE) obtained in no more than two sittings.
- Selection of the correct course combination for the intended course of study during JAMB UTME Registration.
- Candidates must have obtained a minimum score of 180 in the just concluded JAMB UTME Exams to be considered for Admission to the University.
- All Candidates to be considered must have registered FUNAI, as their first-choice Institution
- Prospective Candidates must duly undergo the FUNAI Post-UTME Screening Exercise to be considered eligible for admission into the University.
- All Applicants must be at least 16 years in the year of Application.
For Direct Entry (DE) 2024/2025 Students
If seeking Admission into the University through Direct Entry (DE), you must meet the following criteria to be considered for Admission to the University:
- All Candidates must obtain a minimum of 5 O’Level Credits (SSCE/GCE) obtained in no more than two sittings.
- Prospective Candidates must have passed two ‘A’ level/IJMB Subjects. The Subjects must relate to their intended field of Study
- Applicants must have obtained Passes in JUPEB/A subjects related to the intended field of Study to be considered for Admission into the University.
- Depending upon your choice of course of study at the University, a degree (First Class/Second Class Upper) in a related discipline may also be needed.
- All applicants must also have purchased the FUNAI Direct Entry Form from JAMB. They also must have been duly registered and made all requisite payments on the FUNAI Portal.
- Prospective Candidates must have passed the National Certificate of Education (NCE), National Diploma, or any other Advanced Certificate with a minimum of a merit pass
Frequently Asked Questions About FUNAI
Is FUNAI conducting post-UTME screening in 2024?
Yes
The Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo shall conduct a Post-UTME Screening Exercise to sort out and subsequently admit qualified Candidates.
Currently, the screening form goes for a non-refundable fee of N2000 to be paid via REMITA.
Is Medicine accredited at Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ikwo?
The Pre-Clinical Program of the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo has since been accredited by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
As such, all interested and qualified applicants are free to enroll to study this course at FUNAI
What is FUNAI’s cut-off point for 2024/2025?
The Governing Council of FUNAI has set the cut-off point at 180 for the current session.
As such, all Candidates who scored a minimum of 180 in the just concluded UTME Exams have met the cut-off point requirement of the University for Admission Consideration.
Does FUNAI accept second choice Admission Applications?
No
There are reports that FUNAI accepts second-choice applications. This is not the case as this has been long discontinued.
The Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo does not accept second-choice applications.
To be considered eligible for Admission consideration, ensure to make them your first choice Institution during your registration.
What is the cost of Hostel Fees at Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo?
The management of the University has made provisions for Hostel Accommodation within the Campus.
However, students who wish to stay in the Hostel at FUNAI are mandated to pay a sum of N30,000 for Hostel Fees.
