The University was founded by the Nigerian Federal Government on 1st January 1988 when four universities of technology, earlier merged in 1984, were split leading to the creation of the nation’s first two universities of agriculture in Makurdi and Abeokuta.
On the same date (1st January 1988), the University’s pioneer Vice was appointed in the person of Professor Nurudeen Olorun-Nimbe Adedipe. Professor Adedipe, however, officially assumed office on 28th January 1988.
However, after due diligence was done and the documentation leading to the founding of the University was duly consulted at its 53rd statutory meeting in June 2010, this was duly reverted to the date stipulated by the laws establishing the university – 1st January 1988.
The Federal University of Technology, Abeokuta (FUTAB), had, prior to the founding of FUNAAB been established in 1983.
However, in 1984, FUTAB was merged with the University of Lagos which led to its name change to the “College of Science and Technology, Abeokuta, (COSTAB)” before the aforementioned split that took place in 1988.
The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta kicked off its operations from the Abeokuta Grammar School’s old campus in Isale-Igbein and subsequently completed its permanent relocation to its permanent site along Alabata Road in the year, 1997
The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) is one of the three Universities of Agriculture currently running in the country with the other two at Umudike (Abia State) and Makurdi (Benue State).
FUNAAB commenced academic activities at its mini campus in Isale-Igbein at the heart of the town of Abeokuta which is the capital city of Ogun state.
It wasn’t until December 1997 that FUNAAB moved to its permanent 100-hectare sized permanent site situated next to the Ogun-Oshun River Basin Development Authority along the Abeokuta-Ibadan Road.

Admission Requirements For Admission Into FUNAAB
All Individuals seeking to pursue any of the available programs at FUNAAB should meet the following requisite conditions.
For those seeking admission to FUNAAB through JAMB UTME:
- Possession of at least 5 O’Level credits (GCE/SSCE) which must be obtained at a number of sittings not exceeding two.
- Also, all candidates must have made the correct ‘course combination’ selection needed for the intended course during their UTME Registration.
- To be eligible for admission consideration, all candidates must have obtained the university’s minimum cut-off mark of 160 in the just concluded UTME exam.
- All Candidates to be considered must have registered FUNAAB, as their first-choice Institution
- Prospective Candidates must duly undergo the FUNAAB Post-UTME Screening Exercise in order to be considered eligible for admission into the University.
For Direct Entry (DE) 2024/2025 Students
To be qualified for admission consideration into any of FUNAAB’s academic programs through Direct Entry (DE), you must meet the following requirements:
- Possession of at least 5 O’Level credits (GCE/SSCE) which must be obtained at a number of sittings not exceeding two.
- Prospective Candidates must have duly passed two ‘A’ level/IJMB Subjects that are closely related to their planned field of study.
- Also, to be considered for Admission into the university through DE, all applicants must have also obtained passes in JUPEB/A subjects related to the intended field of Study.
- A Degree (first class/second class upper) in a closely related discipline may be needed depending on your choice of course of study
- All applicants must also have purchased the FUNAAB Direct Entry Form from JAMB. They also must have been duly registered and made all requisite payments on the FUNAAB Portal.
- Any prospective candidates who wish to enroll at FUNAAB through DE must have passed the National Diploma, National Certificate of Education, or any other recognized Advanced certificate with a minimum grade of a merit pass.
