It was a result of the inadequately trained teachers for the expansion of post-primary education in River State in 1970, after the civil war, that gave birth to the Advanced Teachers Training College, with Dr. William Maxwell Jnr, as its leader, who also was a USAID representative sent to Rivers State as at then. and that was how The Ignatius Ajuru University of Education started as an Advanced Teachers’ Training College on 14th June 1971.
The teacher’s training center was later upgraded to Rivers State College of Education in 1975, by the promulgation of Edict No 1 on 25th February of the same 1975, And the principal of the school Mr. Emmanuel Aguma became the first Provost of the new College. And on 11th March 1978, the first graduation ceremony of the college took place with 462 students from four different sets receiving Certificates in Education.
In 1982, the College admitted its first candidates for the Bachelor of Education degree program, after they had affiliated with the University of Ibadan to offer a Bachelor of Education degree program for students.
Much later, the college was upgraded again to a University, under the University of Education Law, since the main vision of the founding fathers was to have its own autonomous university that will award a degree to its students.
everything being equal, in 2010 the school was renamed Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, in honor of a one-time Chairman of the institution’s Governing Council, the person of late Ambassador Ignatius Ajuru, the one who spearheaded the upgrading of the College into a University. This was done on October 20, 2009, by His Excellency, Rotimi Chibike Amaechi, the governor of Rivers State, who officially pronounced the institution a university.
