The creation of this institution of higher learning was aimed at satisfying the long-standing need for a university within Abuja which had, then recently become the country’s new Federal capital.
The creation of the University was also deeply rooted in the ideals that governed the founding of the city of Abuja. The University’s matriculation of its first set of students in the year 1990 signaled the commencement of academic activities at its mini campus in Gwagwalada.
Later that same year, the University of Abuja received approximately 12 hectares of land along the Abuja-Airport Road. The land gift was aimed to help the University in the continued development of its main campus.
Even as development continues to take over the University’s main campus, it has continued to carry out Academic proceedings at its mini-campus with its Distance Learning Programmes running from Area 3, Garki.
Ever since the university’s inception, it has continued to provide stellar educational services to all regardless of race, political affiliations, social standing, or gender which have rightfully earned it the name “The University for National Unity”, in addition to its strategic location in the center of unity.
UNIABUJA currently boasts a total strength of around 35,000 students.
UNIABUJA currently runs both Undergraduate and postgraduate programs as well as other associate programs and a Centre for Distance Learning.
