About NYSC

The National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) was created in 1973 by the federal government of Nigeria. It was created immediately after the Nigerian civil war since the entire nation was destabilized by the war. However, the NYSC was created with the aim of re-uniting the nation, reconstructing, rebuilding, and even developing the country.

Graduate Exemption from NYSC

It is not all the students who graduate from a university, polytechnic, or other tertiary institution will have the chance of being mobilized for the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC), the reason is that some people will not be able to meet the criteria for being mobilized for the NYSC, and those who will not be mobilized will be offered what is called the EXEMPTION CERTIFICATE.

But you may be asking why can’t every graduate just goes for the service, are they not all graduates from the tertiary institution? You may e right, but there are reasons the government and the entire NYSC management do not allow slime university graduates to be deployed for the NYSC, and the reasons are what we are going to look at right now.

The conditions that will exempt some graduates from being mobilized for the NYSC are as follows:

  • If a particular graduate is above the age bracket of 30 years or older
  • Graduates who have already served in the Nigerian military
  • And if the person has also served as a  para-military for at least a year
  • Also, graduates who are physically disabled will be exempted from the service

Number of Graduates Mobilized Yearly for NYSC

Every year, thousands of Nigerian students graduate from tertiary institutions all over the country, but not all of them that are mobilized at the same time, because of the number involved, so they decided to mobilize them based in batches, and each batch will carry at least of 40,000 thousand graduates deployed to different states in the country.

From the list of all the graduates they will mobilize only 40,000 thousand graduates and the rest will be shifted to another batch that will be mobilized after a particular batch has graduated, while those that are eligible will be offered an exemption certificate in place of the discharge certificate.

NYSC Mobilization Eligibility Criteria

All the prospective corps members must meet the following eligibility criteria of the NYSC:

  • The graduate must be a Nigerian citizen by birth or descent;
  • He or she must not be older than 30 years of age during the period of registration.
  • You must be a graduate of a recognized institution with a degree or Higher National Diploma (HND)

  • To calculate your age for the NYSC mobilization, you have to find out the personal information that you uploaded on the JAMB website when you were registering for your Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB). They will crosscheck your certificate of date of birth and compare it with how old you will be at your graduation from the university.
  • When JAMB discover that you are more than 30 (thirty) years at the time of your graduation, they will be left with no other option than to offer you an exemption certificate, which is an equivalent of the discharge certificate that corp members receive when they pass out from service.
  • One thing you have to know is that the management of the National Youth Service Corp does not consider any factor like I am just 30 years and one day old, immediately you are 30 years and one day old, you will not be mobilized.
  • NYSC us to rely on the information given to them by the different universities where the prospective corp members graduate from, but after they discovered that the university too was helping most of their graduating students to falsify their age, they now go to JAMB for more reliable information.
  • Again any candidate who is sure that he/she does not have the date of birth error in the information submitted to JAMB, then JAMB can check the candidates’ date of birth through the information they submitted to the West African Examination Council (WAEC)
  • Finally, you have to understand that the date of birth that NYSC will use is the date of birth that appears on your degree certificate or your HND Certificate.

Conclusion
