About Occupational English Test (OET)

What is this OET all about?  This is a language test that is mainly for health professionals. 

Professor Tim McNamara was the who conceived the idea of OET in late 1980.

It has been in existence since 2013 and has been conducted by CBLA or Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment.

This test was designed for the following 12 sets of health professionals:

Types of OET Exams

This test is actually designed to enable healthcare professionals to learn the language skill that will enable them to carry out their work successfully. There are different types of OET examinations, they are four different types, which are as follows:

  1. Speaking, 
  2. Listening, 
  3. Reading,

Details of the Types of OET Exams

Speaking,

This is a part of the test that is meant to test the student’s ability to communicate effectively with people in the area where they work. The section will last for 20 minutes.

Listening,

Here, recording audio about professional healthcare is played for the candidate to listen and understand what is discussed in the audio, and respond to questions. It will take about 45 minutes to complete this section. 

Reading,

Candidates in this place, are given a test to read, o ascertain their ability to understand what they have read. In this section, candidates are given 60 minutes for the test. 

And writing.

Candidates are given reports and others to write, on in order to determine how effective they can write. They have about 45 minutes to complete this section.

How much is the OET examination fee for those who are applying for the test from Nigeria?
Prospective candidates for the examination in Nigeria are to pay the sum of N148,000.

Requirements for Registration

To register for your occupational English Test, you need the following requirements:

  • Color photo with white background
  • No more than three months old
  • Your photo should be Saved in jpeg format with a file size between 20 and 200 KB
  • Show only the head
  • The photo should be sharp and not blurred, pixelated
  • No smiling or frowning, the expression should be neutral
  • A valid email address
  • A passport or National ID is needed as your valid ID
  • Meet the Passport-size requirements of OET photo
  • Visa or Mastercard credit card

OET Exam Eligibility Requirements

Age limit

Academic Qualification

To be qualified for the test, applicants must be holders of professional healthcare degrees in the following areas; medical degree, nursing degree, or other relevant healthcare qualification.

Work Experience

Some and not all healthcare councils require that applicants have a certain level of work experience.

Documents to be Submitted Alongside the Application

Testing accommodation requires supporting documents that are duly signed by your health specialist, such documents include:

  • Evidence of disability/impairment that substantially limits a major life activity,
  • The present situation of your disability/impairment and how it does not allow you to take the test under standard conditions
  • Information regarding the testing accommodation requirements as a partaker in the OET Reasons why it is necessary to request arrangements/accommodations 

Documents for Special Arrangements/Testing Accommodation

  • Current and relevant to your testing needs;
  • Preferably in English, or 
  • Where the language is not in English, it should  be translated
