The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) is a Federal Institution of Higher Learning situated in the historic city of Ile-Ife in Osun State.
The Founding of the University dates back to 1961 although academic activities commenced at the Institution in October 1962 when it was known as the ‘University of Ife’ during the era of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola-led Western Regional Government.
It wasn’t until the 12th of May, 1987 that the University was renamed to “Obafemi Awolowo University” in honor of Chief Obafemi Awolowo (1909-1987), who was the pioneer premier of the Western Region of Nigeria.
In the year, the newly elected regional leaders lay a high level of priority on the development of primary and secondary education as these were viewed as very crucial elements of overall societal development and transformation.
It was however, in 1959, that the Federal Minister of Education formed a commission to probe the country’s future manpower needs of university graduates between 1960 and 1980. This committee was led by Eric Ashby with Frederick H. Harbison, who was a Labour Economist, as one of the members of the committee.
The Western Regional Government had expected that the University of Ibadan would be able to satisfy the tertiary education needs of the region, however, the Federal Government disagreed strongly.
Nonetheless, in October 1960, the Ashby Commission advised in favor of the creation of additional universities in the eastern and northern regions of Nigeria, and another Federal University within the Lagos Protectorate, but none in the more educationally advantaged Western Region which at the time had a “free and universal primary education program” currently running.
However, after the submission of a minority report recommending the creation of a new university within the western region, which was accepted by the Federal Government, the facilities of the Nigerian College of Arts, Science, and Technology, Ibadan were provided to the region for that cause
In the end, a 13,000 acre (5,300ha) of land was gifted by the people of Ile-Ife for the proposed University and an initial financial grant aid of £250,000 was offered by the Western Regional Government.
