The University is situated in the Capital city of Nassarawa State, Lafia. It was established in 2010 by the then-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
FULAFIA is one of the nine federal Universities that was established in the States without the presence of a Federal University. This was done to foster equity and equal access to quality education by the Nigerian populace.
Although the University was established in 2010, it began Academic Activities in September 2012 with Professor Ekanem Ikpi Braide as its maiden Vice-Chancellor.
The current Vice Chancellor of the University is Prof Shehu Abdulrahaman whose appointment was made by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari.
This appointment came into effect on 11th February 2021 after the tenure of Prof Muhammad Sanusi Liman had expired.
The University offers both Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programs (M.Sc and Ph.D.)
Although the University is relatively new, it has continued to grow steadily over the years and continues to remain a center of learning and character grooming.
It currently runs a variety of courses ranging from Humanities, Sciences (Natural and Social Sciences), as well as Arts.
