The University provides training for Officer Cadets that later get commissioned into one of the three wings of the Nigerian Armed Forces; the Army, Airforce, or Navy.
Training at this Institution takes five years to complete. Of the five years, one year is dedicated to military service while four years are dedicated to Academic Studies.
The NDA, as the University is often called, was created in February 1964 as a reconversion of the then British-run Royal Military Forces Training College (RMFTC), whose name had been changed to the Nigerian Military Training College (NMTC) upon Independence.
Brief History Of the Nigerian Defence Academy
This military university serves as a training facility for the workforce of the Nigerian Army, Airforce, and Navy and had a kick-off student strength of 62 cadets with a majority of the training officers-in-charge being officers of the Indian Army.
The NDA Kaduna closely follows the method of operation of the NDA, Khadakwasla, Pune, India. The premier commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna was the Indian Army Brigadier M. R Verma.
It wasn’t only in 1978 that the NDA Kaduna developed into a Nigeria training staff facility and even began a series of bilateral training of foreign nationals in 1981.
However, it was in 1985 that the Academy started offering undergraduate Academic programs to military officers under training, although, currently the Academy also offers post-graduate programs such as Masters and Ph.D. for both civilian and military-minded students alike.
The central objective of the NDA remains training cadet officers in academic, military, and character development, in accordance with global best practices, to enforce the ideas of discipline and leadership skills through its 5-year “Regular Combatant Course”.
Completion of the five-year combatant course also culminates in the award of a Bachelor’s Degree and presidential commissioning into the second lieutenant rank for Army Cadets and a corresponding rank for both Navy and Airforce Cadets respectively.
Up until 2011, this course was restricted to only males, with the first-ever set of female cadets commencing training in September 2011.
The total student strength at the Academy had risen to 2500 as at 2019

Note that you are not required to pay any school fees during the course of your study at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna.

Candidates vying for admission into the Faculties of Arts, Science, and Interdisciplinary Studies, as well as, Military and Social Sciences, must obtain a minimum score of 180 in their UTME Exams.
However, candidates looking to get admitted into the Faculty of Engineering must obtain a minimum score of 210 in their UTME Examination to be eligible for Admission consideration by the Academy.
