About ICAN
What does ICAN mean? Popularly known as “ICAN”, this acronym is a short form for saying “Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria”. ICAN was established in September 1965 by Act of Parliament No. 15. Since its establishment, the professional body has produced not less than 38,000 public accountants across the federation, working in different sectors of the economy.
Today, the body has turned into a large community of accountants to carry out professional accounting and auditing in the financial institutions or sectors in the country.
In Nigeria, ICAN ( Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria) and ANAN (Association of National Accountants of Nigeria) are the two most recognized professional accounting associations with the regulatory authority in the country.
The idea behind the establishment of ICAN was to produce world-class chartered accountants, regulate the accounting sector, and ensure that there is an improved ethical standard and a high level of technical competence that will help to drive public interest.
Duties of ICAN
In this section, we are going to look at the duties and obligations saddled on every member of ICAN. The establishment of ICAN was to perform certain duties and the duties are as follows:
- Determine the knowledge and skill level that intended chartered accountants are required to meet to be able to join the accounting profession, and ensure that those levels are maintained notwithstanding the circumstances.
- To ensure the establishment and maintenance of registration of fellows, associates, and registered accountants entitled to practice as accountants and auditors, and not forgetting the publication of a list of those persons regularly, all by the provisions of the Act that established the body.
- And finally to carry out all the functions conferred on it by the Act, and perform the same, through the Council of the Institute.

ICAN Certification Eligible
Every graduate is eligible for the ICAN certification, but before you apply for the ICAN, you have to possess certain documents which we are going to list here for you. The documents are:
- Your O’level result with at least of credits in 5 subjects.
- Passport photograph
- Your degree certificate from a university
- Or an HND certificate from a polytechnic.

ICAN Requirements
As we mentioned earlier, you have to meet the ICAN eligibility criteria before you even think of registering for ICAN. all things being equal, you are to provide the following documents for your registration, depending on the type of examination that you want to register for. The requirements for all the different examinations are here:
Requirements For Professional Students
If you are a professional student, you are to provide the following documents for your registration:
- University degree certificate
- Your certificates must be from a recognized University accredited by the appropriate council, such as the NUC
- Or Higher National Diploma
- Your certificates must be from a recognized Polytechnic accredited by the appropriate council.
- Any other qualification that the body may require of its students
For ATSWA students
If you are an ATSWA student, you are to provide the following documents for your registration:
- Five (5) credit passes in any subject including English Language and Mathematics in the WASCE, GCE, NECO, or NABTEB or its equivalent,
- SSCE should not exceed two sittings
- Ordinary National Diploma (OND).
- Any other qualification that the body may require of its students
- Your certificates must be from a recognized Polytechnic accredited by the appropriate council
- National Certificate in Education (NCE) from any recognized College of Education.

ICAN As A Professional Student Application Procedures
The following are the steps that will be followed by professional students when registering for ICAN. they are:
- Log in to the ICAN website at http://icanig.org/RPlogin.php
- Make a payment of ₦7,000 to ICAN as a professional examination registration fee
- Complete your online form online, using the transaction reference and receipt number
- Scan a passport photograph and fix it on the registration form.
- Then click on submit after you have filled out the form.
- Print out the completed form
- And sign it.
- Your form should be endorsed & certified by a chartered accountant who is your sponsor
- Their names, membership number, and contact number, will be needed
Documents Required
The following documents are to be attached to applicants’ applications and submitted to any ICAN office around them.
- The original pay direct receipt/transaction reference
- Photocopies of your credentials and educational qualifications,
- Two passport photos with certification.
- Three blank envelopes with your address.
ICAN ASTWA Student Application Procedures
The Accounting Technicians Scheme of West Africa {ATSWA}. The following are the steps that will be followed by professional students when registering for ICAN. they are:
- Pay the ATSWA registration fee of ₦6,000 to ICAN
- Complete your online form, at the ICAN website at http://icanig.org/RPlogin.php
- Scan and add a passport photograph to the registration form.
- Then click on submit after you have filled out the form.
- Print out the completed form
- And sign it.
- Your form should be endorsed & certified by a chartered accountant who is your sponsor
- Their names, membership number, and contact number, will be needed
Documents Required
These are the documents that candidates are to attach :
- An original receipt/transaction reference.
- Certified photocopies of your credentials, (NECO, WASCE, NABTEB, OND, NCE)
- A duplicate of your birth certificate.
- Two passport photos with certification.
- Three blank envelopes with your address.
ICAN Membership Application Procedures
To become an ICAN Professional Student, here are the steps to follow to register:
- Pay an Induction fee of N100,000.
- Visit the ICAN website at http://www.icanonline-ngr.com/paydirect
- With your deposit slip and receipt numbers generate your PIN and serial numbers.
- Enter your Student Registration Number and PIN
- Fill out the form completely
- Upload your passport-sized photograph
- Then submit your application.
- Print the form
- Have your referee sign the form.
- Attach every necessary documents
- Forward your proof of payment to ICAN
