UNICAL Admission Requirements and Courses Offered – The Institution known today as the University of Calabar evolved out of the Calabar campus of the University of Nigeria (UNN) which had commenced functioning during the course of the 1973 academic session with around 155 students and a small group of academic, non-academic, and administrative staff.
This institution is situated in the heart of Calabar city which is the capital of Cross River State.
The ancient city of Calabar, where the university is located, itself is rich in culture and tradition with a long-standing history of Western civilization.
UNICAL, as the University of Calabar is more popularly called, sits on a 17-hectare land mass and continually strives to be a center of quality interactive education ever since its inception.
The current vice chancellor of the institution is Professor Florence Obi with Mr. Gabriel Egbe currently servings as the University’s Registrar.
It is also worthy of note that the University of Calabar is also very inclusive with students from all states, most ethnic groups, and language classes in Nigeria completing various academic programs at this great institution.

Admission Requirements For Admission Into UNICAL
Read on if you have been craving to pursue an academic program at this prestigious institution but do not know what the admission requirements at this institution are.
The requirements are added to include both students who wish to be admitted through UTME and Direct Entry.
For those seeking Admission to UNICAL through JAMB UTME:
- Prospective candidates must possess a minimum of 5 O’Level Credits (SSCE/GCE) that were obtained in no more than two sittings.
- Ensure that you select the correct course combination for your intended course of study during JAMB UTME Registration as not doing so may result in disqualification.
- Candidates must have obtained a minimum score of 180 in the just concluded JAMB UTME Exams to be considered for Admission to the University.
- All Candidates to be considered for admission at the university must have registered UNICAL, as their first-choice Institution
- Prospective Candidates must duly undergo the UNICAL Post-UTME Screening Exercise in order to be considered eligible for admission into the University.
- All Applicants must be at least 16 years old at the time of admission application.
To be eligible for admission consideration at the University of Calabar, UTME candidates must ensure to meet the set of requirements listed above.
For Direct Entry (DE) 2024/2025 Students

UNICAL Direct Entry candidates’ admission requirements include:
- All candidates that intend to be admitted at the university through DE must have obtained a minimum of 5 O’Level Credits (SSCE/GCE), in no more than two sittings.
- Candidates that wish to be admitted into this institution through Direct entry must have passed two IJMB/’A’ Level Subjects. However, the subjects in question must be closely related to the intended course of study.
- Applicants who wish to be admitted through JUPEB, must have obtained passes in JUPEB/A subjects related to the intended field of Study to be considered for Admission into the Institution.
- All applicants must also have purchased the UNICAL Direct Entry Form from JAMB. They also must have been duly registered and made all requisite payments on the UNICAL Portal.
- In addition, candidates seeking admission into UNICAL must have passed an advanced certificate such as a National Certificate of Education (NCE), National Diploma (ND), or any other with a minimum of a merit pass

Frequently Asked Questions About FUAM
Is UNICAL conducting post-UTME screening in 2024?
Yes.
The University of Calabar, a foremost institution of higher learning in the country administers Post UTME screening for applicants who wish to complete an academic program at the university and would be doing so in 2024/2025.
However, UNICAL’s Screening form goes for a non-refundable fee of N2,000 and you must meet the university’s post-UTME eligibility criteria to be eligible to partake.
Does UNICAL accept second choice Admission Applications?
No
The University of Calabar does not currently accept second-choice entries in UTME and must be added as a first-choice institution during UTME registration if you must be considered for admission at the institution.
If you had not included this institution as your first choice institution of study during your UTUME registration, then you shall have to change it by applying for a change of course.
Does UNICAL offer Nursing Science?
Yes.
Nursing Science is one of the offered courses at the University of Calabar. This course is a five-year course if you are admitted through UTME but takes four years if you are admitted through Direct Entry.
