About the Nigeria Immigration Service

Every year, Nigeria Immigration recruits men and women into the service to boost the workforce of the agency, which will help to combat the ever-increasing demands of the agency. However, this year is not exempted.

For those who don’t know, the agency was operating under the Nigeria Police Force but was formally separated to act as an entity of its own in 1958. It was in 1963, that Immigration Department was formally established by an Act of Parliament. From the time it was acting under the Nigerian Police Force till its inception in 1963 till date, NIS has had a series of transformations.

The first set of Nigeria Immigration officers were former Nigeria Police Force Officers. As the agency grew, it was given more responsibilities. However, in 1988 it was saddled with the task of issuing travel documents such as passports to  Nigerians. It was NIS that first introduced the use of e-passports in the entire Africa, and that came into existence in 2007.
