About IMF Economist Program 

The international monetary fund economist program is a program  set up by the body supported by other relevant bodies alongside its member countries. The program is aimed at laying a unique foundation for the economist who would work in the IMF, the program is a three year program and it will scale through two departmental assignments . This program is not a training session or period, it is a kind of job that is given to you with real responsibility as an IMF economist . 

The duties scheduled will include policy development, country and regional operational work, research, capacity development and teaching .

Eligibility criteria (person who are eligible to apply 

The following are the criteria for persons who wish to apply for this program. They include but not limited to 

  1. Graduate who are under the age of 34 as at the time of joining the IMF Economist program 
  2. A graduate who is a national of one of the member countries of IMF 
  3. A recent graduate of economist or one who will be in a year of completing his/her PHD in a recognized and relevant field of study  

Application Opening Date 

The application of the IMF program usually opens late September every application year. After successful application, shortlisted candidates will be called for interviews between October and January . 

After the interview, offers are being made to candidates who have met the requirement  at the selection process .

Stages in the selection process 

The stages in the selection process includes but not limited to 

  1. Preliminary interview 
  2. Presentation of University Transcript 
  3. In person Panel Interview
  4. Review by the Internal Committee of Senior Staff 
  5. Presentation of offers letters 

Preliminary Interview 

This is an interview that lasts for a period of 30 to 40 minutes. Here you will be asked for  a high level overview of your research paper , also you will be asked to respond to questions on economic topics which are related to the work of the IMF. 

You will also be asked for an overview of your interpersonal and communication skills . it is here you will be given dates for IMF campus visit .

Presentation of University Transcript 

This  is the process after the preliminary interview, it’s a process where you are asked to forward your most recent university transcript. This is usually from your PHD program. Also you will be requested to provide three academic references who can recommend and also testy for you. you have to note that the references do not have to be existing staff of the IMF . A research paper is also a major criteria which is of publishable standard  or one which is one or two chapters of your dissertation. 

In person Panel Interview

This is usually after the presentation of the university transcript by the applicant . This process is by invitation. Thesis because only candidates who have met the requirements or the standards of the IMF will be invited. 

The in person interview is usually made up of two(2) or three (3)  IMF economists who are senior and  a human resource officer . 

The interview is usually almost the same format like the preliminary interview , the interview focuses on the applicant’s knowledge of monetary , fiscal , balance of payment , financial sector issues , behavioral skills  with the aim of providing 

  1. Deeper assessment of  applicants analytical skills,
  2. Judgment 
  3. Oral communication 
  4. Interpersonal skills 
  5. Knowledge of microeconomics 

Apart from the in person panel interview , you will also be asked to take a psychometric  assessment which lasts for a period of 90 minutes . it is usually a written examination 

The aim of this exams is to identify your most preferred skills and and also your writing skills 

Review by the Internal Committee of Senior Staff 

This is the last process in the selection process. The panel interview process is usually committee by late January and all applicants who have reached the panel interview stage are usually called for a review by the internal committee of senior staff 

The review committee are the persons who will make the final selection . 

The will review the seven assessment and then proceed to the offer stage 

Presentation of Offers Letters 

This usually happens in February .This is only given to successful applicants while the incoming class of Ep’s will resume their IMF the next application period
