This is to inform the general public, especially students who are getting prepared to register and sit for the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), that the 2024 examination will be a Computer-Based Test (CBT).

It has been made clear by the board of the West African Examination Council, (WAEC) that the body has decided to adopt CBT for the conduct of its examination, come 2024.

It seems as if they are emulating JAMB in this regard. What that means is that the Paper and Pen examination mode has come to an end, if this decision will stand as the body has proposed.

How to achieve the set goals

Most people have started to react negatively towards this new adoption, saying that it seems like an impossible mission, looking at the circumstances surrounding the new conduct of the examination.

However, according to WAEC Registrar, Dr. Iyi Uwadiae, said that the body is all out to adopt the method for the conduct of the exam all over the West African countries.

He further emphasized the possibility of this when he pointed out that the new international office in Lagos is equipped with internet facilities, and that over 350 candidates can occupy the space, and that is not going to be a problem at all.

Moreover, the just concluded UTME was conducted by JAMB and was written in that hall/center.  The center was actually designed for candidates writing aptitude tests, and it can also be used for WAEC now that there is a need for it.

Modalities for Writing WASSCE CBT

These are the modalities that have been put in place by WAEC to embrace the new method of writing the examination via CNT.

All the “Objective Tests” questions will be written on a computer-based, system according to the body.

On the other hand, “The Essay and Test of Practical Papers will take a hybrid form, meaning that some parts of the exam will be written in CBT, while others will be on paper and pencil.

According to WAEC, students/candidates will receive their examination questions on their computer screen but are expected to write their answers on the answer booklets that will be given to them.

The examination will be conducted in urban centers/cities, according to WAEC. it, however, stated that candidates with special needs have also been put into consideration.

Mock Exams to be conducted with CBT

In line with the new method, WAEC has made it clear that it will begin the experiment of the CBT examination with Mock. it says all the candidates who will be sitting for the exam will write a CBT mock exam, so as to familiarise themselves with the new system.

As a result of this, all the students preparing for the examination are advised to begin now to familiarise themselves with the use of the system, so that it will not be new to them when the time comes.

Why WASSCE Should be CBT

The world is transforming very fast every day, and it is essential that we move along with the transformation.
