Gombe State University was founded in 2004, the institution is situated in Tudun Wada, Shamaki Ward, Gombe State. It has 8 faculties, 40 programs, and 18,874 students in total. They have 11 member governing council and other principal officers, which is headed by Professor Aliyu Usman El-Nafaty, the Vice Chancellor of the University. The institution is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, with Primus Inter Pares its motto.
The university also runs, Postgraduate programs which were established under section 7 subsection (i) of the Gombe State University Law 2004. After the inauguration of the postgraduate school, the first three (3) academic programs commenced with M.A History, M.Sc Physics, and PGDE in 2012/2013. In 2014/2015, the school experienced enormous expansion that now increases the Postgraduate school to sixty-eight (68) programs under three (3) faculties.
Gombe State University is a state-owned institution, controlled and managed by the Gombe State Government. It was under the leadership of Governor Muhammed Danjuma Goje, that the Gombe State University was set up. The university has no religious affiliation.
